2009 Confederations Cup Round Up

Wow. The Confederations Cup was a cracker this time around.

The USA had to be the shock of the tournament though reaching the Final after an impressive run of form, knocking out some of the favourites to win the competition. Brazil were determined to win the competition after a slow start and bad form at the beginning of the tournament, only edging a nervy win over the impressive Egypt with a last minute penalty from Kaka.

The USA though had other idea’s, and took a shock lead after only 10 minutes on the clock through a Dempsey goal that he barely touched flicking it into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Brazil were shell-shocked, yet they didnt know that the americans hadnt finished there and even went 2-0 up inside 27 minutes when the impressive Donovan played some 1-2s with Dempsey and powered home from great play between the two midfielders.

Dempesy Scores the Opener

USA were given a wake-up call when Brazil fired home seconds after the interval Luis Fabiano scoring a real scorcher into the bottom right-hand corner collecting a lovely pass from the attacking winger Robinho and slotting the ball home. The Brazilians didnt give up there though, doing everything they could to try and force an equalisier, and got one thanks to great work by Kaka with a mazy run down the left-hand side. The brazilian midfielder skipped past 2 defenders before applying a great pass to the onside Robinho who somehow missed from 2 yards out hitting the crossbar, but fortunately fell perfectly for the waiting Fabiano who simply could not miss.

Both teams kept on attacking, counter attacking each other, patiently waiting for the right time to come when they could pounce and score. Despite USA Goalkeeper Tim Howard ordering his defenders to makr up Brazil took the lead 6 minutes from time when Elano fizzed in a cracking ball to Lucio, who was unmarked powerfully headered past the stranded Tim Howard.

It was all too much for Captain Lucio who burst into tears after scoring, showing his delight of putting Brazil into the lead. In the after-math of the goal Howard was screaming at the defence for failing to keep strong and mark up well. Brazil managed to hold onto to this amazing scoreline, considering USA were playing very well and were 2-0 up inside the first half-hour. They were looking to spring another suprise on the fromer confederations cup champions after knocking out Spain 2-0 but it was not to be on the night, and Brazil ran out deserved winners.
